Lori Province

Armenia is a country in the Caucuses which has a rich history spanning thousands of years. The country itself is extremely mountainous with an average elevation of around 4000 feet (1200 meters) above sea level. It is bordered by Turkey to the west, Georgia to its north, and Azerbaijan to its east. It is a multi-party, democratic nation which gained its independence from the Soviet Union in 1991.

The Lori Province is one of eleven regional provinces in Armenia. It is located in the north of the country, spanning a large majority of the border between Armenia and Georgia. Its major cities are Stepanavan, Alaverdi, and Spitak, with the capital Vanadzor, being the largest city with a population of more than 85,000. Lori is the site of some of the most famed Armenian heritage sites, two of which, Haghpat and Sanahin Monasteries, being UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
